The Saint Photios Greek Orthodox National Shrine and Museum on George Street, was built 1749 and served as a religious center in 1777.
It was originally known as Casa Avero and located about one hundred yards from the city gates of St Augustine. This place of worship welcomed the survivors of the failed Dr. Andrew Turnbull colony located in New Smyrna.
Today, inside the Saint Photios Greek Orthodox National Shrine and Museum one can find a description of the journey of the 600 survivors who walked 70 miles from the Turnbull Plantation in New Smyrna to St. Augustine to start a new life. Minorcans, Greeks, Italians and others came to the area and many settled on Charlotte Street to start a new life.
