Church of the Holy Comforter (or Cross) in Crescent City is an example of a Richard Upjohn Carpenter Gothic style church design featuring narrow lancet windows. In 1876 Rev. Charles S. Williams, former Rector of St. Matthew's Church, Brooklyn, New York, moved with his family to Crescent City. The number of winter visitors to the area as well as permanent residents had increased sufficiently by 1877, that the people felt the need for a church in which to worship. The first services were held in the church on February 10, 1878.
