Camels, Creeks, Cows and Churches

Our road trips were more than historic churches as we traversed the Sunshine State looking for picture-perfect moments to capture for my book Historic Florida Churches.

My husband Jack and I encountered a camel or two in the country,

Camels near Mikesville

…and a herd of cattle trying to break free as they slowly crossed a rural road while their handlers were trying to corral them back to the other side of the fence.

We discovered more of the natural beauty the state has to offer with the sights and sounds at Falling Creek …just up the road from a rustic country church,

Clapboard Church
Falling Creek United Methodist Church

At Falling Creek United Methodist Church in Lake City, a wood clapboard building replaced the original log cabin when the church was first established in the 1850’s. As stated on the informational sign at the park, the church is located “up the road” from Falling Creek Falls and Park. The church features two front doors, one for men and one for women, who sat on opposite sides of church. According to a plaque at the church the Baptist worshipped here until 1866.
