The Barberville Pioneer Settlement in Volusia County, featuring local and regional historically significant buildings, started as an idea in 1976 when a group of Volusia County teachers founded the Pioneer Settlement for the Creative Arts, Inc. It now features exhibits showcasing the lifestyle of early settlers from the late 1800s to the early 1900s. The popular Fall County Jamboree, established in 1976, features not only folk music but arts and crafts vendors, a corn boil and sugar boil, along with living history demonstrations. The property is home to the 1885 Pierson Railroad Depot, the 1926 Astor Bridge Tender’s House, an early 1900s Turpentine Commissary Country Store, an 1875 log cabin, and the Midway United Methodist Church, in addition to other historic buildings. Midway United Methodist Church, established in 1872, was named Midway because Barberville was halfway between Jacksonville and Tampa on the Methodist circuit. The present structure was built in 1890 and was used by the congregation until 1964. It was moved to the Pioneer Settlement in 1994 and later restored.
